Robert J. Barnes
In Memoriam
Global Capital is saddened by the loss of Robert (Bob) Barnes. Bob had been an important team member of Global Capital, and over the years had provided wisdom and insight critical to many of the transactions completed.
Bob Barnes retired from Estee Lauder following a 27-year career in senior management positions with this industry leader. During his tenure with Estee Lauder, Bob contributed significantly to growing the company from a $3 million relative start-up company to an international industry leader with more than $2 billion of sales.
From 1975 through 1990, Bob was President of Estee Lauder USA and Senior Vice President of Estee Lauder Inc., the highest management position held by a non-family member. During his tenure as president, he exceeded budget in every year, compiling an enviable record of profitability. His accomplishments in this area include the introduction of the highly respected “Beautiful” women’s fragrance which still ranks as the top selling prestige fragrance in the world. Additionally, Bob introduced many makeup, skin treatment and other products which resulted in the revenue mix changing from 80% fragrances to 40% fragrances, 25% makeup and 35% cosmetic treatment products.
Prior to his association with Estee Lauder in 1964, Bob spent eighteen years at Lehn and Fink where he was sales and marketing director for their cosmetics division for eleven western states.
